Beginners Yoga Classes Shanklin-workshop (and returners)

Beginner Yoga classes in Shanklin are surprisingly hard to find, which is one reason most people who come to this workshop have been meaning to try Yoga for years. Something always got in the way: not feeling bendy enough, not knowing what to wear, worrying about being the only beginner in a room full of people who know what they’re doing. This morning is for you.

There’s nothing to keep up with and nothing to get right. We move slowly, we breathe, and we pay attention to what the body is actually doing rather than what it’s supposed to look like. Most people are surprised by how little effort it takes to feel a real difference: a less stiff back, shoulders that have quietly dropped, a sense of having more room inside.

What the morning looks like

Arrive from 9:45 for a cup of tea and a chance to say hello. We practise from 10 until about 12, moving slowly from simple lying and sitting movements into standing, and finishing with a proper rest. Then there’s half an hour to sit with tea, ask anything you like, and let it all settle. We’re done by 12:30.

Wear anything you can move comfortably in. Mats and everything else are provided. If you have an injury or a health condition you’d like me to know about, mention it when you arrive, or drop me a note beforehand.

About the way I teach

I’ve been teaching Yoga for over twenty-five years, and for most of that time my practice has been shaped by the work of Vanda Scaravelli, who taught that Yoga should undo tension rather than add to it. In practice, that means we work with the breath, the ground, and the spine’s natural movement, and we let the body soften into a posture instead of forcing it there. You don’t need to know any of this to enjoy the morning, but it’s why the workshop feels the way it does.

What happens next

If you enjoy it, my regular weekly classes are waiting, and everyone who comes to a Saturday intro gets their first class free. If you decide Yoga isn’t for you, you’ll still have had a gentle, restful morning, which isn’t a bad way to spend a Saturday.
